Therefore making my Memorial Day post is a day late. But better late than not at all.
Especially when it comes to something as important as thanking our service men and women, past and present.
Although I hope everyone had a fun, relaxing long weekend. I hope even more so that you were able to celebrate all of those in your lives that made the ultimate sacrifice. The ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom here in the US of A's. Whether a close family member who served in the past or someone serving to this day, they all deserve our thanks, gratitude and support every single day.
And my favorite tradition about Memorial Day, is when my dad sends the story of my Grandpa and his time in the US Navy. He sends it to us every year on Memorial Day and Veteran's Day:
"Remember your Grandpa, Lester Paul Stewart. He was a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. NAVy. He fought in 3 wars - The Germans in the Atlantic Ocean while on a PT Boat. He was even there on the beaches of Normandy, D Day June 6, 1944. Jovana, your special connection with your Grandpa is your birthday being June 6.
He also re-enlisted when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. And then once again in the Korean War."
Even though it's the same story, it will never get old. I unfortunately missed the chance to meet my Grandpa but through little things like the story above, I get to remember him as if I did know him. And as a special treat this year, my wonderful Aunt Derrie dug up some pictures of my Grandpa in the service.
Seeing these deepened the meaning of Memorial Day for me...
I'm forever grateful.
